Kooken & Hoomen - San Francisco, CA
Kooken & Hoomen occupy the interim, the cracks that fall between Rock, Jazz and Electronic music. Their ideas are singularly concentrated, the parts constructed and arranged like rock, the music spaced out for maximum formal effect. But as a song moves ahead in time, a jazz-like approach to both composition and performance arises -- ideas expand, parts dissipate and reappear in the distance behind other parts. And although they play the music "live", in real-time, the pure sound elements of electronic music -- manipulations, loops, alien beats -- enter the songs and expand the music's dimensionality without downplaying the "player" aspect of the performance.
The best music links individual songs up to something larger than “song”, and Kooken and Hoomen’s arrangements open the songs up into a space wider than the parts each musician plays. The instruments communicate delicately and dynamically -- once again, as in jazz -- but there are very few solos, and those that do appear continue the beauty of the song around it. As a result, their debut album, Escuela (k&h records, KH-001), while showing the influence of artists like Tortoise, Plaid, Amon Tobin, Air, and Weather Report, is unique unto itself.
Recently nominated for an SF Weekly music award, Kooken & Hoomen gig regularly in the San Francisco Bay Area.
