Freelance Bishops
The Freelance Bishops - Boston, MA
An infectious funk flavor is the Freelance Bishops' foundation for improvisation and jazz sensibility. The Bishops' straight-forward, yet sophisticated approach to funk is reminiscent of both the soul-jazz combos of the 60's and the harder funk of the 70's, but they inject a modern vibe which sets them apart from all others. The strong musical connections that exist between the members of this group allow them to play together in a dynamic relationship where the total is truly greater than the sum of its parts. The Bishops deliver a unique sonic experience that is based on super-tight grooves yet moves unrestrained so that it can really go places. It's music for your mind and booty.
The Bishops' repertoire demonstrates the wide range of styles which they explore while unmistakably creating the coherent Bishops sound. From disco beats to boogaloo, and from sinister motifs to up-beat soulfullness, The Freelance Bishops are influenced by artists such as James Brown, Herbie Hancock, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Jimmy Mcgriff, the Meters, John Scofield, The Crusaders, Roy Ayers and the Greyboy Allstars. These are all ingredients to the five musical personalities that create the Freelance Bishops sound....a sound that is strongly steeped in the groove but embraces improvisation in the true tradition of jazz.
The Bishops got their start 3 years ago in the historic mill city of Lowell, MA where they brought a new sound to an eager college audience but also became a part of the rich local scene. Now in Boston, the Bishops have really made a name for themselves with regular stints at such area venues as the House of Blues, the Good Life, the Middle East, Lilli's, and Johnny D's. Turn on your radio in Boston and you're likely to hear the Bishops on WERS 88.9 fm, Boston's best college station. They have made several live performances on air and are in regular rotation on WERS's jazz program, 'The Jazz Oasis'.
With an enthusiastic spirit for growing their audience, the Freelance Bishops have been making regular treks out of beantown to hit some of the best rooms in the northeast and beyond. In fact, their recent national tour has stirred up the status quo of the jam-band circuit and left audiences across the country eager to have the Bishops back. With their roots in Boston and a national tour under their belts, the Freelance Bishops are expanding their reach and broadening their musical horizons.
