New Additions:

annuals2thAnnuals - Such Fun CD & LP - Such Fun embraces a vast landscape of musical richness, combining Adam Baker's accomplished songcraft with an instrumental palate that is even more blindingly colorful than their previous work. Standing between epic post-rock, pop guitar crunch, woozy country swing and lovely orchestral ballads, Such Fun is revelatory in its depth. This perfectly crafted album, filled with harmonies, guitars, bursting crescendos, and bold strings, sees Annuals reaching to the farthest parts of their musical imaginations and coming back with something incredible. CD $12.98; LP $16.98

dbsthDeep Blue Sun - Live at Tree Sound CD - West coast psychedelia meets southern soul. Classic funk meets New Orleans boogie. Deep Blue Sun is a dynamic and original six-piece band playing funk, rock and southern fried soul. Their newest live CD captures the wide range of musical styles, featuring a powerful rhythm section, intricate harmonies, soaring guitar and driving keyboards. The music flows seamlessly between inspired improv and melodic, well crafted songs that reveal more with every listen. Discover the band Yonrico Scott (Derek Trucks Band) calls the "best kept secret in the jam band world." $12.00

quactusthQuactus - Once A Pond, A Spine CD - Taking its cue from classic bands including the Grateful Dead, Phish, and the Allman Brothers, Quactus has developed a diverse style that blends various genres of music. Harmonious vocals set atop changing textures and moods, mixed with subtle meter changes, intricate melodies, and a cohesive improvisational style backed by a solid rhythm section comprise the core of the Quactus sound. Their jams may run the gamut from psychedelic to trance-like to ultra-funky or even heavy metal excess. The members of Quactus have over 30 years of musical and audio instruction amongst them in both private and college level courses, which has given the band a strong command of music theory, songwriting, improvisation, vocal technique and music production skills.'s "New Groove of the Month" for May 2008! $12.00

chef2thChef Dave - No Strings Attached CD - There's a whole lot of jamming going on down south, and this is one exemplary slice of it! Featuring master keyboardist and improviser Johnny Neel and fiery guitarist Seth Davis, this quartet cooks up some rocking fusion and funk mostly-instrumentals! All songs were written by the players spontaneously, as they were being recorded. There were no rehearsals and no charts - what you hear is what happened at that moment! Seth Davis, guitar; Johnny Neel, organ, piano, keys; James Cook, bass; Derek Mixon, drums. $10.00

mm2thMike Musick - Honest CD - If you like great songs you can sing in the car or in the shower with words that just might change your life, this album is for you. At times he reminds one of David Gray, or maybe Joe Jackson, quite possibly because of his laid back and understated approach. Most of the time his songs revolve around a memorable hook and simple beat, letting the pop grow and flower into full bloom without any unnecessary flourishes. This simplicity is key, and it makes this an album you'll want to hear over and over again. Music is a universal language, and Musick is a universal messenger. There's no guessing - he sings it to you straight from the heart on his title track, he opens your eyes with his world-important song "America," and tells stories we can all relate to like "Scream" and "Staring at the Sun." The album flows beautifully with soulful rhythms that crest with waves of realism, piquing your curiosity and unleashing your inner consciousness. $10.00

tgdscarabthGrateful Dead - Egypt 1978 Scarab T-Shirt - Limited Edition Black t-shirt with Egypt 1978 Scarab logo on front. Please choose size Small thru XXL (XXL adds $2.00). $19.98

tgdglyphicsthGrateful Dead - Egypt 1978 Glyphics T-Shirt - Limited Edition Desert sand colored t-shirt with Egypt 1978 Glyphics design on front. Please choose size Small thru XXL. XXL adds $2.00. $19.98

delbestthDel McCoury - The Best of Del McCoury: The GrooveGrass Years CD - A few short years before Del McCoury reached his peak in popularity, he put together a band that would prove to be one of the most potent and powerful in Bluegrass music. After leaving the Rounder label with the want to move forward and push the boundaries of Bluegrass, Del signed on to be a part of an elite group of musicians, engineers and producers that would become known as The GrooveGrass Boyz. At that point The Del McCoury Band would record what would arguably become the best sounding, hardest hitting Bluegrass of his career. He recorded for the first time with icons Doc Watson, Mac Wiseman and Bootsy Collins. Though this album contains 9 Bluegrass tracks and only one GrooveGrass track, the Bill Monroe classic "Can't You Hear Me Calling" with Funk pioneer and icon Bootsy Collins, the impact of the stylistic convergence is noticeable in every song. $15.98

boristhBoris Garcia - Once More Into The Bliss CD - Once More Into The Bliss is the newest offering from Boris Garcia and features guest appearances from Buddy Cage (New Riders) and Donna Jean-Godchaux-MacKay (Grateful Dead). To be clear, Boris Garcia isn't a person - it's a band. Inspired by their predecessors like The Grateful Dead, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Yonder Mountain String Band, and Railroad Earth, Boris Garcia has cleverly twisted the free-form spirit of the jamband scene with folk, blues, jazz, and bluegrass music to forge their own sound. $14.98

stanley2thRalph Stanley - Old Time Pickin': A Clawhammer Banjo Collection CD - Ralph Stanley established himself long ago as America's foremost singer of traditional mountain music. His instantly recognizable voice has earned him Grammys, a Grand Ole Opry membership, an honorary doctorate degree, a place in the bluegrass hall of fame, and a living. Ralph has, for the most part, set aside the banjo in his live performances for several years, but he usually picks it up for at least one rollicking, crowd-pleasing "clawhammer number." For a man who helped establish the bluegrass genre, it is fun to watch him return to the old-time mountain style of playing that he learned from his mother when he was 11. The eighteen songs on this collection represent nearly 30 years of recording for Stanley. Most of the clawhammer songs he recorded for Rebel Records are here, including nine previously unreleased tracks. $9.98

beatlesmmdvdthThe Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour Memories DVD - Magical Mystery Tour was the first Beatles film project following the death of manager Brian Epstein in August 1967. The film was unscripted as various 'ordinary' people traveled on a charabanc bus, having 'magical' adventures en route. The movie soundtrack was released in the UK in December 1967 and in 1968 received a Grammy Award. Magical Mystery Tour Memories is an upbeat rockumentary featuring the vivid memories of those who witnessed the making of the movie and features a celebrity cast along with anecdotal stories and unseen 8mm home movie footage, as well as eyewitness accounts from fans, onlookers and the cast of the movie. "This is a happy, upbeat film" comments David Lambert, producer and director of Arthouse Pictures, who produced the movie. "Probably the last time the Fab Four were all still getting along." Keith Badman (author and Beatles expert) said "I have seen the rough cut screener and can't wait to see the finished program. It is fantastic." This film is a must have for all Beatles fans worldwide and an opportunity to look back fondly at the heady days of the swinging 60s. $19.95

zappastage3th_0Frank Zappa - You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 3 (2 CDs) - These 25 tracks were recorded between 1971 and 1984, although most of it is from the 1984 tour. Of special interest is the first track, "Sharleena," recorded December 23, 1984. On it, 15-year old Dweezil joins his father on guitar, the first time they played together onstage. Also of special interest is a live version of "King Kong" that includes FZ's guitar solo from the notorious Rainbow Theater show of 1971. It was during this very number that an overreacting audience member, whose girlfriend claimed to be in love with Frank, chose to jump onstage and knock FZ into the orchestra pit; he wound up in the hospital and wouldn't perform for the remainder of the year. This solo is deftly edited into a 1982 performance of the same tune. On the lighter side, there's an '84 performance of "Bamboozled by Love" where the band slides into a Yes riff that you'll probably recognize. $17.99

New Additions:

tlg6thTea Leaf Green - Raise Up the Tent CD - Their first new studio album in three years brings you a raw TLG sound with no wacky production getting in the way! Sharing some of the style and substance of musical contemporaries My Morning Jacket, Wolfmother, and The Raconteurs, Tea Leaf Green conjure 70s Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and The Grateful Dead, taking classic sounds and giving them a present-day polish. Raise Up the Tent is a party like no other! $15.99

avett5thThe Avett Brothers - The Second Gleam CD and LP - Featuring six new tracks, The Second Gleam is the second in The Avett Brothers' The Gleam EP series and follows the release of 2007's excellent Emotionalism LP. This installment sings to the uncommon senses of the common man and walks calmly and powerfully among fragile and hard-learned themes of life and song. The North Carolina grass-punk trio, made up of Seth and Scott Avett and Bob Crawford, update rootsy American music with a gentle pop momentum. The simplicity of The Gleam series showcases the brothers' true talent for writing songs that speak straight to the heart. CD $6.99; LP $12.99

mmwzthMedeski Martin and Wood - Zaebos: The Book of Angels Vol. 11 CD - Focused, ecstatic and wildly improvisational, the trio of Medeski Martin and Wood is one of the most popular and vibrant instrumental ensembles of the last few decades, playing to packed houses from Budokan to Bonnaroo and back again. Original members of the earliest Masada units (reaching back to 1993), they are a natural choice to interpret the lyrical Book of Angels, and here return to the fold like three prodigal sons. Ten exhilarating and creative arrangements of Masada/Zorn compositions that alternately groove, lope, shred and burn with a fiery passion. $15.98

ozric16thOzric Tentacles - Jurassic Shift CD/DVD set - Ozric's fourth proper album, Jurassic Shift is released here in re-mastered form with a bonus DVD. The DVD includes the video for "Vita Voom" plus live footage from the Glastonbury Festival and studio footage of the making of Jurassic Shift. $15.98

drdog4thDr. Dog - Fate CD and LP - Fate sees the Philadelphia-based quintet filtering the gamut of American popular music into its own idiosyncratic brand of blue-eyed, dilated-pupil soul. As ever, Dr. Dog makes magic from an enduring pop palette of intricate harmonies, shape-shifting melodies, and ramshackle audio ingenuity - all presented through the band's slightly skewed and utterly individualistic outlook. Fate is the record Dr. Dog were destined to make, a timeless yet contemporary distillation of the band's open-armed, big-hearted sound taken to new heights of craft and creativity. Inventive, magnificently realized, and absolutely irresistible! CD $15.99; LP $17.99

www6thWalter "Wolfman" Washington - Doin' the Funky Thing CD - Doin' The Funky Thing is an impressive and consistently moving achievement by an artist in the fullness of his maturity and a big step forward for the Wolfman as a contemporary blues composer. This program presents Wolf at his very best in every category: writing, arranging, singing, playing guitar and directing the band. The horns whisper, punctuate, sing and shout like a natural extension of the Wolfman's musical personality. There's plenty of Grade-A Wolfman funk like "Tweakin," "Wolf Jazz" and the two-part dance-floor marathon "Shake Your Booty/Funky Thing" highlighted by the Roadmasters and their leader's fluid, effortlessly emotive guitar. $15.99

ss6thSlightly Stoopid - Slightly Not Stoned Enough to Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid CD - Once a 6-song EP of which only 5,000 copies were printed, the demand for this material became so great that the band added 14 songs and called it an album. It includes the first ever studio version of "Sensimilla." $14.98

sunfoldthSunfold - Toy Tugboats CD - Everything from jazz to electronic, folk to power pop and all psychedelic stops in between are found on this album from the members of Annuals! Consisting of all the members of Annuals, Sunfold is a musical endeavor headed by vocalist/guitarist Kenny Florence. The purpose of Sunfold is to rediscover the sense of uninhibited exploration of melody and harmony that is always present in the pioneering of a genre and mold it into a sound that is reflective of past and present musical paradigms, without getting stuck in any particular formula. Luckily, Kenny has found himself surrounded by a group of close friends and talented musicians who share his insistence on constantly moving forward. Florence's lyrics reflect a sincere fascination with nature and existence, being heavily influenced by Eastern mysticism and metaphysics as well as mathematical thought. $15.99

sonnymthSonny Moorman - Telegraph Road CD - The Sonny Moorman Group is a Cincinnati, Ohio-based Blues/Rock band in the classic "power trio" format, consisting of Sonny Moorman (guitar & vocals), Marc Hoffman (bass), and Dave Fair (drums & vocals). Sonny and the band are nine-time winners of CAMMY awards (Cincinnati Area Music awards). The band was formed in 1994 and was signed to its first recording deal by 706 Records/Sun Studio at the 1994 Crossroads in Memphis. Since then the band has played 300 nights a year and has performed at regional festivals and clubs and toured the US with Easyriders Magazine, performing at all their events. The Sonny Moorman Group was nominated for the 2005 Cincinnati Entertainment Awards in the Blues category. $12.00

Bonnaroo Music Festival - June 14-17, 2007

Bonnaroo? I go to southeastern Tennessee for the Barbecue. The festival is just what I do between stops at Prater’s.

All kidding aside, I do book a hotel every year on the route to the fest that takes me by Prater's. What's better than some "Q," chili, potato wedges and sweet tea to prepare a person for the sweltering daily musical overload that is Bonnaroo?
