Announcing the new Home Grown Music Network Member Bands for Fall 2008!

Charlie Wheeler Band - A combination of the hottest and most talented musicians between Jamestown, NY, Warren, PA and Ridgway, PA, CWB was created in 2007. Originally assembled as a studio band, they became energized during the recording of their debut CD and employed the doctrine used by the old masters of rock - high quality vocals, rippin' guitar leads and lyrics you can relate to. With the addition of Fuzzy Roselli on Rhythm Guitar, John Rutherford on the Bass and Mike Dreier, the pieces all fit together, and the smokin' live show is not to be missed. CWB plays a variety of styles on their debut CD, Highway Run, including straight ahead blues/riff based rock to rockabilly to some sweet monster power ballads. He leaves ample room in his arrangements for the other band members to express themselves instrumentally and is never shy about expansive improvisation.

Chef Dave - Fans of pure, expressive "Jam" music with a southern slant might find their new favorite band in Nashville's Chef Dave. The band's mostly instrumental sophomore album, No Strings Attached, harnesses the soul of the south, from Stax to the Allmans, with a trippy, mesmerizing groove and some spectacular musicianship. Seth Davis leads the band with his high-arcing, soul-tickling slide guitar work, where the Delta runs smack dab into the early PsychRock of the Dead and their torch-bearers. Davis has surrounded himself with magnanimous company, including organist extraordinaire Johnny Neel, who gives the songs thrilling trills and smoky atmospherics. The band's new album finds Chef Dave with a clear sense of purpose - to give fans of Southern Rock jams an equally virtuosic and progressive alternative to the genre's mostly still-active pioneers.

Deep Blue Sun - "One of the best CDs of 2008" - Hittin the Note Magazine. West coast psychedelia meets southern soul. Classic funk meets New Orleans boogie. Deep Blue Sun is a dynamic and original six-piece band playing funk, rock and southern fried soul. Their newest live CD captures the wide range of musical styles, featuring a powerful rhythm section, intricate harmonies, soaring guitar and driving keyboards. The music flows seamlessly between inspired improv and melodic, well crafted songs that reveal more with every listen. Discover the band Yonrico Scott (Derek Trucks Band) calls the "best kept secret in the jam band world."

Hot Day at the Zoo - Hot Day at the Zoo is a fiercely progressive "Newgrass" string band grown in Lowell, MA. Perhaps it's easier to coin a word to describe them than it is to pigeonhole their music. The foot-stomping, bass-thumping sounds of HDATZ are a far cry from that of your typical bluegrass band. HDATZ mixes their high-energy, gritty-urban-bluegrass with strong elements of folk, blues, ragtime and jazz. Fans describe the band's pioneering sound as "ZooGrass." Their tunes are layered with intricacies and depth reminiscent of Robert Hunter, the Grateful Dead, and Yonder Mountain String Band. Many great musicians spanning a broad spectrum inspired their grassy, jazzy, old-timey, Americana infused rock and roll. Tight musicianship, skillful songwriting and amazing personalities introduce us to places they have traveled, people they have loved, those they have lost, and those they surround themselves with.

Jango Monkey - With both musicianship and song craft that demand your attention, Jango Monkey uniquely blends indie rock, Americana and improvisation. Their first release, which ascended to #6 on the Jambands.com radio charts in May 2008, documents the depth of the band, moving from quirky indie pop gems to extended jams, while employing unique instrumentation to the effect of a rock orchestra. Hittin' the Note called the music "adept, distinct, well-structured, and at times feverish." Jango Monkey delivers a sonic journey through tight tongue-in-cheek sarcastic pop to huge guitar based jams that open up into vibrant exploratory spaces, further drawing the listener in.

Josh Phillips Folk Festival - Josh Phillips, singer and primary songwriter for the wildly popular southern funk act Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band, is stepping out and stepping up! Phillips, who recently parted ways with the band, is quietly redefining his musical identity as one of the most soulful and thought provoking songwriters in the scene today. Josh Phillips Folk Festival have been gaining a veritable army of fans that range from the youngest listeners to seasoned traditional music fans. With the release of the first studio album, Wicker, Phillips has truly provided a strong testament to his ability to effortlessly capture generations worth of musical evolution, and traverse years of cultural dilution, bringing the listener back to the very source of roots, folk, soul, r & b, rock and reggae. The end result is a collection of memorable compositions that can literally transport the listener to another time and another place, rife with a romantic and endearing spiritualism long lost in today's over produced and manufactured music scene.

Quactus - Since forming in 2005, Quactus has quickly risen to the top of L.A.'s jam scene, developing a diverse style that blends various genres of music. Harmonious vocals set atop shifting textures and moods, mixed with subtle meter changes, intricate melodies, and a cohesive improvisational style backed by a solid rhythm section comprise the core of the Quactus sound. Yet, their jams may run the gamut from psychedelic to trance-like to ultra-funky or even heavy metal excess. In a live setting, the band never performs a show the same way twice, often including on-the-spot composition via hand signals between band members. The band is also known for throwing in a cover tune or song tease from time to time. As a result, Quactus is establishing itself as one of the most exciting new live acts in the Southern California scene.

Rainmaker - Rainmaker is a 4-piece band from the San Francisco Bay Area. They blend vintage and modern sounds and draw upon Roots Music, Indie Rock, Funk and Soul. Since forming in 2005, Rainmaker has logged hundreds of shows, spreading their infectious grooves, strong songwriting, and family-style harmonies throughout California and beyond. Their second album, Long Slow Fade, has garnered high praise from critics and fans. The album recently reached Number 2 on the jambands.com Radio Charts and features guest spots from the Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart and Garaj Mahal's Eric Levy.

Sol'Jibe - There's more to the Biggest Little City in the World than empty wallets and cheap hotel rooms - especially if you like your rock jams blended with roots music, electric violin, world rhythms, and picante Latin zest. Founded in Reno, Nevada, in 2002, Sol'Jibe's "world rock for the Gypsy soul" is attracting a growing legion of fans throughout the western U.S. and beyond. Perhaps best described as Dave Matthews meets the Afro-Cuban All Stars, Sol'Jibe was a huge hit at music festivals this summer, including High Sierra, Joshua Tree, Lightning In A Bottle, Shakori Hills, Seattle Hempfest, Cirquinox, and Earthdance.

Stanley Maxwell - Connecticut-based four-piece Stanley Maxwell's independently-produced debut album "Don't Wake The Baby!" blends (among many other influences) jazz, funk and rock with tight arrangements and intricate group improvisation. The disc includes "Mousetrap," an eleven-bar blues influenced by Thelonious Monk. The band's recording of the composition by pianist Evan Green has attracted international attention, including winning the Relix Magazine November 2007 "JamOff" contest, and winning "Best Jazz Song" in the 7th Annual Independent Music Awards. The album was recorded in Bristol, Connecticut by Dan Silvia of Hillgrove Recording, and mastered by Anthony Latt of the LattKave Recording Studio in Yonkers, New York.

New Additions:

Porter Batiste Stoltz with Page McConnell - MooDoo CD - Recorded live at Club Metronome in Burlington, VT, MooDoo features the sultry New Orleans funk sound of the tightest trio in that or any other city - George Porter Jr. (bass), Russell Batiste (drums), and Brian Stoltz (guitar) - PBS! Heavily informed by their stints in bands such as The Meters, Papa Grows Funk, and Vida Blue, and steered further by their own unique projects, PBS makes good and greasy funk just like you'd expect. For this special night, they were joined by keyboardist Page McConnell, who added his funkotronic keyboard stylings and powerful piano to 5 tracks. The songs on MooDoo, which include originals along with choice covers from the likes of Curtis Mayfield, Bob Dylan and, of course, The Meters, run long and strong over fields of jazz, rock, fusion and funk! $14.00

Greyboy - 15 Years of West Coast Cool CD or LP - This "best of" contains previously unreleased materials, hard to find mixes, and the tracks that made Greyboy famous as the originator of a new laid back, sunny, jazz and soul-inflicted West Coast sound. Includes appearances from Sharon Jones, Quantic, AG (Showbiz and AG), Bart Davenport (Honeycut), Shawn Lee, Nino Moschella, Jeremy Ellis, and others. RIYL: Greyboy All-Stars, Nightmares On Wax, Quantic, Mr. Scruff, Medeski, Martin & Wood. CD $16.99; LP $19.99

Adrian Hester - Further Out CD - Adrian Hester is a native of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He received his B.A. in Music Industry/Business with an emphasis on jazz bass from the University of Southern Mississippi, under the direction of John Palenski and Larry Panella. He furthered his studies after moving to Jackson with Dr. London Branch, who has performed with artists such as Kenny Burrell, Kidd and Cliff Jordan, and Eddie Harris. Adrian has been a regular performer in venues throughout Mississippi over the past eight years. Further Out is his first CD release. One can hear reflections of the artists who influenced him, such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Wayne Shorter, in the chord structures and harmonies throughout his work. At the same time, it is evident that Adrian has developed a style that is uniquely his own. $10.00

Tribal Wings Steal Yor Face Sticker - Stealie logo sticker with Stealie set on wings and tribal designs. Approximately 6 inches wide. $3.00

Give Peace A Chance Sticker - Rectangle bumper sticker, brown with white text. $2.00

Practice Compassion Sticker - Rectangle bumper sticker, blue with white text. "Compassion" is spelled in symbols, much like the popular "Tolerance" sticker. $2.00

New Additions:

annuals2thAnnuals - Such Fun CD & LP - Such Fun embraces a vast landscape of musical richness, combining Adam Baker's accomplished songcraft with an instrumental palate that is even more blindingly colorful than their previous work. Standing between epic post-rock, pop guitar crunch, woozy country swing and lovely orchestral ballads, Such Fun is revelatory in its depth. This perfectly crafted album, filled with harmonies, guitars, bursting crescendos, and bold strings, sees Annuals reaching to the farthest parts of their musical imaginations and coming back with something incredible. CD $12.98; LP $16.98

dbsthDeep Blue Sun - Live at Tree Sound CD - West coast psychedelia meets southern soul. Discover the band Yonrico Scott (Derek Trucks Band) calls the "best kept secret in the jam band world." $12.00

quactusthQuactus - Once A Pond, A Spine CD - Taking its cue from classic bands including the Grateful Dead, Phish, and the Allman Brothers, Quactus has developed a diverse style that blends various genres of music. Harmonious vocals set atop changing textures and moods, mixed with subtle meter changes, intricate melodies, and a cohesive improvisational style backed by a solid rhythm section comprise the core of the Quactus sound. Their jams may run the gamut from psychedelic to trance-like to ultra-funky or even heavy metal excess. The members of Quactus have over 30 years of musical and audio instruction amongst them in both private and college level courses, which has given the band a strong command of music theory, songwriting, improvisation, vocal technique and music production skills. Jambands.com's "New Groove of the Month" for May 2008! $12.00

chef2thChef Dave - No Strings Attached CD - There's a whole lot of jamming going on down south, and this is one exemplary slice of it! Featuring master keyboardist and improviser Johnny Neel and fiery guitarist Seth Davis, this quartet cooks up some rocking fusion and funk mostly-instrumentals! All songs were written by the players spontaneously, as they were being recorded. There were no rehearsals and no charts - what you hear is what happened at that moment! Seth Davis, guitar; Johnny Neel, organ, piano, keys; James Cook, bass; Derek Mixon, drums. $10.00

mm2thMike Musick - Honest CD - If you like great songs you can sing in the car or in the shower with words that just might change your life, this album is for you. At times he reminds one of David Gray, or maybe Joe Jackson, quite possibly because of his laid back and understated approach. Most of the time his songs revolve around a memorable hook and simple beat, letting the pop grow and flower into full bloom without any unnecessary flourishes. This simplicity is key, and it makes this an album you'll want to hear over and over again. Music is a universal language, and Musick is a universal messenger. There's no guessing - he sings it to you straight from the heart on his title track, he opens your eyes with his world-important song "America," and tells stories we can all relate to like "Scream" and "Staring at the Sun." The album flows beautifully with soulful rhythms that crest with waves of realism, piquing your curiosity and unleashing your inner consciousness. $10.00

tgdscarabthGrateful Dead - Egypt 1978 Scarab T-Shirt - Limited Edition Black t-shirt with Egypt 1978 Scarab logo on front. Please choose size Small thru XXL (XXL adds $2.00). $19.98

tgdglyphicsthGrateful Dead - Egypt 1978 Glyphics T-Shirt - Limited Edition Desert sand colored t-shirt with Egypt 1978 Glyphics design on front. Please choose size Small thru XXL. XXL adds $2.00. $19.98

delbestthDel McCoury - The Best of Del McCoury: The GrooveGrass Years CD - A few short years before Del McCoury reached his peak in popularity, he put together a band that would prove to be one of the most potent and powerful in Bluegrass music. After leaving the Rounder label with the want to move forward and push the boundaries of Bluegrass, Del signed on to be a part of an elite group of musicians, engineers and producers that would become known as The GrooveGrass Boyz. At that point The Del McCoury Band would record what would arguably become the best sounding, hardest hitting Bluegrass of his career. He recorded for the first time with icons Doc Watson, Mac Wiseman and Bootsy Collins. Though this album contains 9 Bluegrass tracks and only one GrooveGrass track, the Bill Monroe classic "Can't You Hear Me Calling" with Funk pioneer and icon Bootsy Collins, the impact of the stylistic convergence is noticeable in every song. $15.98

boristhBoris Garcia - Once More Into The Bliss CD - Once More Into The Bliss is the newest offering from Boris Garcia and features guest appearances from Buddy Cage (New Riders) and Donna Jean-Godchaux-MacKay (Grateful Dead). To be clear, Boris Garcia isn't a person - it's a band. Inspired by their predecessors like The Grateful Dead, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Yonder Mountain String Band, and Railroad Earth, Boris Garcia has cleverly twisted the free-form spirit of the jamband scene with folk, blues, jazz, and bluegrass music to forge their own sound. $14.98

stanley2thRalph Stanley - Old Time Pickin': A Clawhammer Banjo Collection CD - Ralph Stanley established himself long ago as America's foremost singer of traditional mountain music. His instantly recognizable voice has earned him Grammys, a Grand Ole Opry membership, an honorary doctorate degree, a place in the bluegrass hall of fame, and a living. Ralph has, for the most part, set aside the banjo in his live performances for several years, but he usually picks it up for at least one rollicking, crowd-pleasing "clawhammer number." For a man who helped establish the bluegrass genre, it is fun to watch him return to the old-time mountain style of playing that he learned from his mother when he was 11. The eighteen songs on this collection represent nearly 30 years of recording for Stanley. Most of the clawhammer songs he recorded for Rebel Records are here, including nine previously unreleased tracks. $9.98

beatlesmmdvdthThe Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour Memories DVD - Magical Mystery Tour was the first Beatles film project following the death of manager Brian Epstein in August 1967. The film was unscripted as various 'ordinary' people traveled on a charabanc bus, having 'magical' adventures en route. The movie soundtrack was released in the UK in December 1967 and in 1968 received a Grammy Award. Magical Mystery Tour Memories is an upbeat rockumentary featuring the vivid memories of those who witnessed the making of the movie and features a celebrity cast along with anecdotal stories and unseen 8mm home movie footage, as well as eyewitness accounts from fans, onlookers and the cast of the movie. "This is a happy, upbeat film" comments David Lambert, producer and director of Arthouse Pictures, who produced the movie. "Probably the last time the Fab Four were all still getting along." Keith Badman (author and Beatles expert) said "I have seen the rough cut screener and can't wait to see the finished program. It is fantastic." This film is a must have for all Beatles fans worldwide and an opportunity to look back fondly at the heady days of the swinging 60s. $19.95

zappastage3th_0Frank Zappa - You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 3 (2 CDs) - These 25 tracks were recorded between 1971 and 1984, although most of it is from the 1984 tour. Of special interest is the first track, "Sharleena," recorded December 23, 1984. On it, 15-year old Dweezil joins his father on guitar, the first time they played together onstage. Also of special interest is a live version of "King Kong" that includes FZ's guitar solo from the notorious Rainbow Theater show of 1971. It was during this very number that an overreacting audience member, whose girlfriend claimed to be in love with Frank, chose to jump onstage and knock FZ into the orchestra pit; he wound up in the hospital and wouldn't perform for the remainder of the year. This solo is deftly edited into a 1982 performance of the same tune. On the lighter side, there's an '84 performance of "Bamboozled by Love" where the band slides into a Yes riff that you'll probably recognize. $17.99
