Railroad Earth - Stillwater, New Jersey
Railroad Earth came together January 2001 in rural Western New Jersey. There was hardly time to get to know each other before the train started rolling. In February they went into a local recording studio and tracked a five song demo they called, “The Black Bear Sessions.” Recorded live in the studio with no overdubs, except backing vocals, the demo turned heads from day one.
Todd Sheaffer’s (formerly of From Good Homes) unique songs and vocal style combined with a six piece ensemble of highly innovative players was just what festival promoters, agents and record companies were looking for. Before Railroad Earth had even played their first gig they were already booked on the stages of some of the country’s most prestigious festivals and venues, including Telluride Bluegrass Festival, High Sierra Music and MerleFest.
After nearly a year of non-stop touring in 2001, Railroad Earth has garnered some of the biggest buzz and accolades of any new band in the country. Their debut CD, “The Black Bear Sessions” (The full length version of their original demos.) was released in June 2001 to rave reviews and steady sales. 2002 is already coming together with a heavy tour schedule that includes performances at Telluride Bluegrass, MerleFest and High Sierra, in addition to many other festivals, colleges and key venues around the US.
Their next album will be released on Sugar Hill Records sometime in late Spring 2002.
“Railroad Earth is a unique and spellbinding band who has that all-too-rare ability to get their point across through both their studio recordings and, especially, their live performances. Todd Sheaffer’s songs shine with brilliance from his poetic and poignant lyrics to his wonderfully singable melodies.” - VILLAGE VOICE
“Railroad Earth's "The Black Bear Sessions" has everything you want from a debut CD: rich songs, great ensemble playing and individual instrumental displays, excellent singing, and a firm promise of more where that came from." - DAVID GANS for JAMBANDS.COM
