May the Flow Be With You
Blount Harvey Opening Doors, Breaking Barriers
Greenville's ECU Pirates can't keep this treasure a secret any longer; debuting vocalist TyKee and explosive tour, this 10-piece live hip-hop and soul collective is truly evolving with the times
Greenville, NC -- Blount Harvey's 2009 Tour is kicking off this summer with a calendar marking an undeniable quest quickly emerging as reality. The unmistakable stellar sound of Blount Harvey's infused blend of traditional hip-hop, soul, R&B and funk is unleashing proof that Hip-hop LIVES; not to mention recruiting a powerful army of fans and followers than ever before.
Erykah Badu, James Brown, A Tribe Called Quest and Jill Scott are branches from the same root Blount Harvey seeks to reconnect with. Boldly complimenting the group, Ed Condran of The Raleigh News & Observer stated, "It's difficult not to compare Blount Harvey with what is arguably Philadelphia's finest contribution to the music world since the halcyon days of Gamble and Huff." Blount Harvey responds with surprise; a grateful smile and a shrug - "...it's the FLOW!" says MC Rudolph Lyrics; adding quickly, "This is not crunk music!"
Blount Harvey's story begins in late 2006, when keyboardist and founder Adam Sebti began improvising with an instrumental, DJ-based quartet. Soon after, additional members began to snowball, and today, the group's dynamic expansion includes performances by up to ten members: including keyboardist 'MadShah,' guitarist 'Nigel Cheeks,' drummer 'illWill,' scratch DJ 'JohnBeez,' and horn section by trumpet player Jon Caison, 'The Professor' and 'The Student,' saxophonist Jon Freeman. Fronted by vocalists TyKee, 'The Kid' alongside emcee extraordinaire 'Rudolph Lyrics,' the combination of melody-making and intellectual lyricism is oozing with soul - bringing Blount Harvey's musical foundation into element; creating a compelling, true to form groove.
In December of 2007, Blount Harvey released their first discography, *L!VE* from The Station, mixed and recorded live at the Outer Banks Brewing Station in Kill Devil Hills, N.C. Receiving rave reviews since, the disc serves as proof that the group knows how to cut it live and lay down a solid groove. All organic, original tracks such as "The Flow," "Tighten It Up," even adding a captivating cover of Jill Scott's "It's Love," are telling of the group by anyone's yardstick of exponential success and professionalism.
Without short-changing their integrity, their musical mission is very simple. Blount Harvey is trying to change the cultural mindset of mainstream music today; primarily hip-hop, with nothing more than a keyboard, heavy guitar riffs, big beats, thoughtful rhymes, scratch DJ samples, a powerhouse singer and a little bit of funk bookending from the horn section. This talented outreach of attempts, however; prove no longer necessary - as the increasingly popular band is moving on to shows booked throughout the Northeast; even scoring two performances at this year's 8th annual FloydFest Revival in June, as an 'Under the Radar' series artist. "We want to go as far as we can," Adam Sebti says. "We recently just got back from D.C., Baltimore and New Jersey, and those turned out well. The next step is Philly and New York. I think we're going to fit in fine there. ...There's only one way to find out!"
Experience the soundscape and find out for yourself as Blount Harvey brings the flow to a town near you. A courteous warning though, to soulful music-lovers and intent listeners: Beware; you may have just discovered your new favorite band.
