How do you promote shows?
I'm trying to gain some different ideas on how to promote shows, venues, festivals etc. Beyond putting up posters and flyers, how do you guys get the word out?

you can always try MySpace, Facebook, & Twitter...find like-minded friends on each of those networks & start posting bulletins or blogs...I know alot of people dont like them, but they are great tools for promoting & getting the word out...hope this has helped:)
these are just a few that I use...
"Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds"-Mr. Bob Marley
Jambase, Local paper, hit college areas if any. Start a newsletter in your market -get email addys from people at shows you attend
Just tell people about upcoming shows while you are at shows!
yeah man i use myspace mainly and other forums online... or i'll go to local bars that i know people that go there are into jambands and i'll leave flyers or w/e.
or i'll burn like 30+ copies of demo cd's and ass them out at shows. it takes a good while to burn that many...but you never know if those people you give them to may end up liking what they hear....and end up passing it along to others. i'll even pass out jamband demo copies out at rave events...i turned many a ravers into fans
i can burn 2 cd's at a time...so yeah it takes a minute. its a good thing to do on a rainy day, with some beer on the side
most people want to know when and where it's happening. With the power of suggestion, and the influence of taste, you can tell people about the shows and events you are excited about, and they will often make an attempt to be there too, especially if you were able to make an impression. what kind of music do they like? what kind of music do you like? it really does start with that.
promote the shows you want people to come to by supporting other artists & showing up to theirs!!! it's about giving x 3 - then taking what comes back your way; & trust me - it will! people in this industry need to know you're there to support not only what will benefit yourself before they'll help to support your musical mission. besides, networking is everything - so go meet some new people & see what direction they may lead you in! you might be opened up to an entirely different community of style & taste, or find a new spot that allows you to post promo materials that you didn't know of before. GET OUT THERE & SUPPORT -ALL- LOCAL MUSIC! the love will come back ten-fold :)
