R.E.M. - Road Movie DVD

$18.99
Built from portions of several concerts from their 1995 Monster tour, Road Movie strives to re-create an entire typical concert from that tour. Unsurprisingly, the set list relies heavily on Monster, neglecting only a few of its tracks, but also manages to include highlights from Automatic for the People, Out of Time, Green, and Document, as well as a few tracks that would later appear on New Adventures in Hi-Fi. The video dutifully focuses on the four bandmembers and the elaborate film and lighting production. When the crowds are brought into the proceedings for the occasional song, Road Movie becomes much more enjoyable -- a rousing version of "Man on the Moon" springs to mind -- as viewers can witness the interaction of R.E.M. and their fans. For a band that occasionally teeters toward taking themselves too seriously, it is important to see that their theatrics are more showmanship than shtick. ~ Brian Egan, All Music Guide
